Research- Collection FMP

Research Ed Ruscha- The Tension of words and Images   Ed Ruscha started his career in the late 1950's at an advertising agency. He is regarded as one of the most supreme artists to this day. Ruscha talks about the power of text and how he layered images of cityscapes  with words and phrases from everyday language to communicate a particular urban experience.  Ruscha was the artist who created the renowned 20th century Hollywood logo.   Ed Ruscha explaining the power that word phrasing has on images Barbara Kruger  is know for her large scale images overlaid with text, often quotes from other famous people. In my own work I will be using thoughts from other people as well as my own image of her work Chris Kenny Chris Kenny Untitled (wake up, fuckface) Chis Kenny Autobiography                                                                                It is crazy that I have come across this artist Chris Kenny after completing my wall of thoughts, as the layout and idea of having

David Bowie Cut-ups I came across this clip of how David Bowie gathers lyrics and strings them together using this 'Cut Up' process. I like the idea of printing out the thoughts from all the different journals I am getting, cutting them up in strips and sticking them down some how.  David Bowie cut up clip used as inspiration I found the process of cutting almost 30 full pages very time-consuming especially after not knowing where it's going. I enjoyed working with my classmates and staff on placing thoughts onto this large piece of card. I gave everyone the freedom to place them wherever and however they chose to. Images of the sentences from completed journals as sorted by myself and the group of volunteers from the videos above. This process took me 4 days to complete. At this stage I was not sure of my next step and I wish I had done some research to help me be more creative with my placement.

People writing thoughts - Collection FMP

Getting people to write their thoughts is a challenge It's hard relying on people to do this part for me. I just have to be patient with the process and trust in the people I have selected. I will find something else to work on while I wait like the way my piece is going to look. I have received some thoughts from a few people and I have found that some of them are better at writing their thoughts than others. In future I will explain my goals more clearly to any group of people that I work with making sure they understand. I will also chose a random sampling of people instead of just choosing people I know. Below are some thoughts I have so far written by a couple of people that are great at expressing themselves- 1) We now live in a time where social media dominates various areas of our lives. This is raising the next generation which is a scary state of affairs 2) With this new law that's being proposed I  need to get all of my kids driving!. Once this bill has been approv

Experimenting with BandLab app - Collection FMP

Bandlab app and layering vocals I was introduced to Bandlab by Marita to record the thoughts. Whilst I'm waiting for friends and family to finish writing their 2 week journal of thoughts, I want to experiment with recording a couple of my own thoughts and get the hang of layering the different thoughts together. My plan is, once I have gathered the writing journals from friends and family is to randomly piece them together to make an audio track. I want it to sound as though you were walking down the street and could hear random thoughts from people who pass by you. Ideally, I want some to sound like they are in the distant background and others to sound in the foreground. I also want to have ambient music playing to create a dramatic effect. Illustrating the BandLab program I experimented with bandlab. I need to think about where I am recording as my voice was bouncing all over the place and I sounded really echoey.  Below is the link to my first attempt at recording. First atte

Deciding what to do my collection about- Collection FMP

Starting Point Collections Project I've thought about this collection project all week and what I could do. Some of my ideas after my initial ideas included Tattoos, my own kid's toys, plastic forks, flowers, light and old clothes. I thought of so many but I got instantly bored of the idea as soon as I thought of it. Then this evening I thought, why does it have to be physical? A collection can be mental thoughts too. Express emotions through art  helped me have a broader perspective on different media that I can use. I've decided to collect people's thoughts. I've selected a load of people, friends and family to write down a collection of their thoughts every day for 2 weeks. I've asked them to be as real and transparent as possible. It will be interesting to see if people think the same things. I have told them the thoughts could be a couple of sentences or just one word and that it's probably best to write their thoughts and feelings, first thing when

I will look into art that uses plastic bags. It might be a good idea to broaden it to all plastics, as there were many plastic things that I mentioned.

Street Art Essay

Political Messages in Street Art     Street Art, originally considered mere graffiti, has now become an established and popular art form that is admired by many who would never think to walk inside a conventional art gallery and is on display in public for all to see. It is seen by many as a controversial art form, as boundaries are often blurred between art and vandalism. From ancient paintings on the walls of caves to the politicised graffiti on the Berlin Wall, seen in the images below where  street art in Berlin began with the west side of the Berlin Wall.   It quickly became a place for artists to express their ideas and frustrations and to deal with the controversy they faced .  People have used street art as a form of expression since prehistoric times. Street art reflects the social issues of the day; for example, during the financial crisis of New York in the 1960s, many factories and construction sites had to board up and close down and opportunists in Spanish Harlem took
