Artist research- Nottingham Castle

Image
Masuki Rina Photographer Masuki Rina Taipingshan captured this trail’s magical atmosphere, showing foggy landscapes, moss-covered beams, and plants growing everywhere in the National Forest Recreation Area in northern Yilan. This is a popular destination near Taipei, known for its misty scenery and lush vegetation. It features the Jianqing Historic Trail, a path that follows old railway tracks and trestles from the area’s logging history.  This photograph exudes a captivating and magical charm. I aspire to recreate a similar scene for the mystery land that lies hidden beyond the gate.

Illuminated Cut Paper Light Boxes -  Hari & Deepti This link takes you to a short video of  Hari & Deepti  working. I really like the work of Hari and Deepti. The paper cutouts look so interesting. When lighting is used, the shadows cast beautiful sharp angles and create so much depth and gradient tone. It's looks so magical as though I want to walk right through it. This is the kind of direction I'd like to go into maybe when creating my own response to the overgrown gate. I would like to try something a bit more simpler while experimenting with this technique as I've never tried it before. Definitely, on a much smaller scale to see what I can do, I'd also like to research some artwork that'll give me some inspiration with something that I would like to create.

Painting I will respond to- Nottingham Castle brief

Image
The chosen painting I have chosen this painting by  Green Landscape with Gate, c.1943-Victor Pasmore to respond to. After walking around the gallery, I thought of the things I am interested in like mystery, emotion and connection. I found that in this painting, asking questions to myself like, what is behind the gate? Green Landscape with Gate, c.1943 Oil on canvas- Victor Pasmore (1908-98) Edwin John Victor Pasmore was a British artist who started by painting realistic scenes like the one above but later became famous for his abstract art. He was inspired by other abstract artists and used new materials to create his works. Pasmore also worked on urban design projects and was known for his innovative approach to art and architecture. He was a significant figure in British art during the mid-20th century.

Visit to Nottingham castle- Castle brief

1st visit to the castle for the new brief Below is an audio review of some paintings I favoured and why at the Nottingham Castle gallery. On the left is the Harold Knight 'The Girl in the white dress' that I responded to last year. I wanted to show how similar it is to the Janine Forbes-Robertson 'Portrait of Cecilia' 1912 painting on the right that drew me in this year. The composition, the tone and the expression are all so similar. Evaluation- Counterculture brief

Evaluation My initial idea was to work with wire, inspired by artists such as Bernar Venet, who uses simple forms, Anthony Gormley and Barbara Licha, who both create human figures, and John Pai, who I believe constructs these sea life-inspired sculptures. However, I soon felt overwhelmed and realised that wire wasn’t the material I wanted to work with and that what I would create might lack the impact I envisioned. My next idea was to develop my skills in ceramics. I took the leap and consulted with the ceramic technicians to explore what was possible. After completing the test pieces, I discovered the work of artist Michelle Segre. I wish I had seen her work earlier, as it would have helped refine my vision for what I wanted to create. My goal was to make a larger sculpture piece that displayed both delicacy and fragility, but yet also have a good structure when standing as I believe this represents a system that can be broken down. My wool sample provided valuable insight into ...

Second interview about class and race- Counterculture brief

Nigel interview  Below are the questions I asked Nigel. How have you found your journey so far with getting the planning permission from the council?  What do you classify yourself as? Do you believe your class and race have held you back in society with opportunities that may arise? Here is the  Link to view the interview  I had with Nigel. The transcript is below. Transcript 00:00:03 Speaker 1 Good evening, carmen. 00:00:05 Speaker 1 Just replying to your question. 00:00:12 Speaker 1 From the experience I've had on the project that was started. 00:00:20 Speaker 1 Over three years ago. 00:00:24 Speaker 1 I do feel. 00:00:27 Speaker 1 I was overlooked a lot. 00:00:32 Speaker 1 And there was times when I did. 00:00:35 Speaker 1 Go. 00:00:37 Speaker 1 Meet them face to face. There was astonishment in the face. 00:00:45 Speaker 1 No handshakes. 00:00:48 Speaker 1 It's a very, very cold approach. 00:00:53 Speaker 1 And. 00:00:56 Speaker 1 I do believe if I was White. 00:...

First interview about class and race- Counterculture brief

Interview with Jermain I had the privilege of interviewing Jermain, a property developer from Nottingham. He spoke candidly about the challenging journey he and his business partner, Nigel—also from Nottingham—undertook to secure planning permission for building flats on a piece of land they own in the city. During our conversation, I asked Jermain the following questions: How have you found your journey so far with getting the planning permission from the council?  What do you classify yourself as? Do you believe your class and race have held you back in society with opportunities that may arise? This is the  Link to view the interview   I had with Jermain. The Transcript is below   Transcript 00:00:00 Speaker 1 Difficult to be honest, I think initially when we set out to build and apply for planning permission, you may be naively think that it's gonna be a simple process. 00:00:16 Speaker 1 You own a property. 00:00:19 Speaker 1 You don't own t...

Branching ideas from the loop hole system- Counterculture brief

Interviewing business partners I want to interview the people who inspired me to create the ceramic spiral and hear about their journeys navigating the challenges and obstacles society often places in our paths. Nigel and Jermain, two business partners, recently achieved a major milestone: securing planning permission for the first time to build several flats. As young Black men, I’m eager to learn about their experiences and how they’ve navigated the complexities of this society. I’ve reached out to other successful black businessmen and women I know, however, their busy schedules didn’t allow for this to happen. In the interviews with working-class Black individuals, I’d like to print some of the repetitive words or phrases onto hessian fabric and experiment with them, maybe creating an audio piece that glitched or sounds like a broken record. An interesting thought crossed my mind: I’d like to hear my mother’s perspective. My mother is white, and while she isn’t in my skin, sh...

Emily Motto I came across this artist who made a sculpture from found objects. I like the contrast of colours that Motto has used to create this sphere shape. It reminds me of the loophole system we have to navigate through in life and by Motto sitting inside, she represents the people. I didn't manage to find the meaning of this piece but it also makes me think of the trauma of sealife that gets caught up in fishing nets.  Emily Motto- My cell;s reach (process shot) sculpture

Wrapping Balloons- Counterculture brief

Making the balloons I have a series of voice recordings explaining my process with what went wrong and what I enjoyed. Above is an audio annotation on my process of creating the balloons.    This link shows me creating the  balloon carcuss     Here is some of the wool I used which I separated with help from Carolann and Kate who kindly volenteered to get stuck in.
