 Interviewing business partners

I want to interview the people who inspired me to create the ceramic spiral and hear about their journeys navigating the challenges and obstacles society often places in our paths. Nigel and Jermain, two business partners, recently achieved a major milestone: securing planning permission for the first time to build several flats. As young Black men, I’m eager to learn about their experiences and how they’ve navigated the complexities of this society.

I’ve reached out to other successful black businessmen and women I know, however, their busy schedules didn’t allow for this to happen.

In the interviews with working-class Black individuals, I’d like to print some of the repetitive words or phrases onto hessian fabric and experiment with them, maybe creating an audio piece that glitched or sounds like a broken record.

An interesting thought crossed my mind: I’d like to hear my mother’s perspective. My mother is white, and while she isn’t in my skin, she is a part of it. Her view is significant because she is like a fly on the wall and has been subject to hear things that wouldn’t be said in front of someone like me. When some people are surrounded by others of the same race, they may feel freer from societal constraints and express themselves more openly, even sharing thoughts that are often considered inappropriate.

By asking my mum these questions, I know she won’t hold back or sugarcoat her responses simply because she’s speaking to me, her black daughter.
