No more spray paint. Back to hand painting
I had some trouble with the spray paint during this stage of the process. I think it may have helped to use a spray base coat first, as the paint was being absorbed straight into the fabric. So far, I have applied four layers of spray paint, but the coverage still looks as though I have only applied one coat.
One positive outcome was that the spray paint added a degree of firmness to the clothes. They became less flexible than before, which created a much better surface to paint onto with acrylic. Because I am painting everything white, any little area I may have missed stand out immediately.
Although painting the piece by hand has been a long and repetitive process, I am glad I made that decision as the finish looks much better than it did with the spray paint alone.
