Reflection on JELLY & LACE Exhibition at Nottingham Castle Gallery
Being part of the JELLY & LACE exhibition at Nottingham Castle Gallery was a real privilege. To have my light box, 'Walk With Me', displayed in the main gallery space felt like such an honour. It’s not every day you get the chance to exhibit your work in such a historic and respected venue, so I feel incredibly lucky and proud to have been selected.
The gallery space where my piece was displayed was mainly lit by natural light coming through the skylights. In contrast, some of the other rooms were much darker, and I think that kind of lighting might have suited my work better, especially as it’s a lightbox. Even so, Walk With Me still had a strong presence in the room. It could be viewed clearly from a distance, and being positioned directly next to the Victor Pasmore painting I was responding to gave it added context and significance.
It was great to watch people stopping to take a closer look, some even walked slowly back and forth to see how the image changed depending on where they stood. That really meant a lot.
It was inspiring to be surrounded by other artists’ work too. Everyone had their own story and how they responded to the work. I came away from the experience feeling more confident and encouraged know my piece is amongst such historic work.
Overall, Jelly and Lace has been a big highlight for me, not just for the exposure, but also for what I’ve learned and felt through being part of something bigger.
