Exhibition Day
I was so happy to have my best friend travel up from London to be with me on such an important day. Installing Borrowed Thoughts took almost an entire day, so I was incredibly grateful to have her and others around to help. Getting all of the hanging elements positioned correctly was a challenge, and having extra pairs of hands and eyes made the process much easier.
A huge thank you must go to my tutors Denise and Julian for making it possible for us to exhibit our work in an external venue, and to Ian and Tricia for allowing us to hold our End of Year Show at Fishergate Point. Having access to a professional exhibition space elevated both the work and the exhibition as a whole. It also created a completely different flow of visitors than we would have experienced at Nottingham College, allowing a wider audience to engage with the work. Being situated in a busy city-centre location meant that people could discover the exhibition naturally, creating opportunities for conversations and connections that may not have happened within a traditional college setting.
I hope future BA students are given the same opportunity to exhibit at Fishergate Point, as I feel it provided a fantastic platform for showcasing our work. The response to my own work was incredibly positive, which was rewarding after the amount of time, effort and emotion invested throughout the year. The exhibition also opened up some exciting possibilities for the future, which I am looking forward to exploring.
I would also like to thank Al at Fishergate Point, who was incredibly helpful when it came to displaying Halo. He worked with me to create the right lighting for the piece, using a soft, warm light combined with a filtered lilac light on the figures. This helped bring the figures forward visually and made them stand out more clearly against the background. The lighting transformed the piece and enhanced the atmosphere I was hoping to create.
Having my work displayed in the large window facing the street provided amazing exposure. With constant traffic and pedestrians passing by throughout the day, the work could be viewed by people who may never have intentionally visited the exhibition. This was particularly effective for my work, as it is often viewed best from a distance. Seeing my pieces displayed so prominently was a proud moment and a fitting way to conclude my degree exhibition.
