Memorable Moments

After painting the figurative portrait of my daughter as a baby, I found myself looking through old photographs of my children, searching for what I would call "memorable moments". Revisiting these images sparked new ideas and reminded me of how many important memories are tied to simple, everyday experiences.

I have been wanting to create something in ceramics for a while, as it is a medium I would like to take full advantage of whilst studying at Nottingham College. Being able to make something three-dimensional with my hands is something that keeps calling to me in the back of my mind, and I feel this project could be the perfect opportunity to explore that further.

In my opinion, one of the closest moments between a mother and child is during breastfeeding. It is a unique bond and connection that is difficult to describe. Looking through my photographs made me think about creating a ceramic piece inspired by this experience.

I still want to keep the work abstract rather than fully figurative. I am drawn to sculptures that cleverly suggest a subject without revealing everything, giving the viewer just enough information to understand the idea whilst leaving room for interpretation. In my mind, I imagine creating a shell-like form that hints at a mother feeding her baby, whilst remaining open and hollow so that the space within becomes just as important as the form itself.
