Caroline Walker - Artist Research

Caroline Walker became a significant artist in my research because her work was a turning point in the development of my own project. I first came across her exhibition Mothering at The Hepworth Wakefield and later bought the accompanying book. Her paintings focus on motherhood, caregiving and the everyday moments that are often overlooked. Rather than depicting dramatic events, she captures quiet, intimate scenes that many parents experience but rarely stop to reflect upon.

What I found most powerful about Walker's work is the way she elevates ordinary moments into something meaningful. Her paintings show the reality of caring for children, from feeding and dressing them to the routines that make up family life. Looking at her work made me think differently about my own experiences as a mother and the memories I hold of my children growing up.

Before researching Caroline Walker, much of my work explored childhood, memory and nostalgia through objects, silhouettes and installation. Although my children have always been central to my work, I had not seriously considered painting them figuratively. Seeing Walker's paintings gave me the confidence to explore this direction. Her work made me realise that everyday family moments can be powerful subjects for art and that there is value in documenting personal experiences.

This shift in thinking led me to create figurative paintings based on my own children. Rather than focusing solely on symbolic objects or memories, I began to consider how the human figure could communicate emotion, connection and personal history. Walker's paintings encouraged me to trust my own experiences as a source of inspiration and helped me see motherhood as a subject worthy of exploration within my practice.

Although our styles are very different, there are clear connections between our work. Walker uses figurative painting to record moments of motherhood, while I often explore childhood and family through sculpture, installation, photography and painting. We are both interested in preserving fleeting moments and celebrating the emotional significance of everyday life. Her work reminded me that some of the most meaningful subjects are often the ones closest to home.

Caroline Walker's work has influenced not only the imagery within my project but also my thought process. She encouraged me to look more closely at my own experiences and helped shape the direction of my practice, leading me towards figurative painting and a deeper exploration of motherhood, memory and family relationships.
