Silhouette Landscapes
Daniel Taylor, Oliver Morris, and Ian Hornak are three artists that have really inspired me. They all use the human figure in their work but in different ways, which I find really interesting.
Daniel Taylor makes soft, emotional images. He often paints people and fills their shapes with textures like trees, water, or clouds. His work feels calm and dreamlike, and I like how he connects people to nature using gentle colours and a painted style.
Oliver Morris creates double exposure photographs. He blends the shape of a person with scenes like landscapes or buildings. His work has more of a moody and mysterious feel, often using darker skies or dramatic backgrounds. It’s more photographic, but still very creative and thoughtful.
Ian Hornak was one of the first artists to use very realistic painting with layering. He filled human outlines with detailed scenes from nature, like forests or gardens. His style feels bold and rich, more like traditional painting, but still focused on blending people with the world around them.
These artists have given me ideas for my own work. I want to use photos of my children and cut around their outlines, leaving the space inside empty. This negative space shows absence, but also leaves room for imagination and memory.
Like Daniel Taylor, I want to bring in a calm and emotional feeling. Like Oliver Morris, I want to use contrast between the cut-out shape and the background. And like Ian Hornak, I want to think about what used to be there, and how nature or memory can fill in the space. My work is personal, and I want to use simple shapes to say something deeper about time, change, and the journeys we take.
